Small Business Blogs – What to Write About

Small business blogs can serve a variety of purposes. What you write will depend largely on your motivation for commencing your business blog. For most business owners, the main purpose of the blog is to increase visitors to the company website, and hopefully, increase sales.

If that’s your primary reason, you’ll serve your purpose well by writing informative postings about the products you sell or services you offer. You can also announce the arrival of new stock, new products or discounts you are offering. You also have the opportunity to explain the benefits of your product in comparison to similar products your prospective clients may have previously used.

“How to” articles are often appreciated by prospective clients browsing through your blog. For example, instructions on the best way to clean some of the products you sell, how to install them or use them properly, or how to select the right model or brand for their needs. An item that explains how your customers can save money by using your product is also a good way to go. Information that may seem basic to you, is not necessarily so to your potential customers.

You can add a touch of light-heartedness to your blog by posting the occasional humorous item or even funny photos related to your business. This can bring additional traffic – as you may know, some people see something funny and feel obliged to email the link to everyone in their address book.

Keep in touch with anything related to your product or service, by signing up for Google news alerts. You’ll receive emails about relevant news items which are often very blog-worthy!

There are of course some things you shouldn’t blog about on small business blogs.  Adding items about your home life, friends or relatives should be avoided – what you post is there for the world (which, like it or not, includes some very odd people) to see.

One benefit that often goes unmentioned is that by placing a lot of informative information on your blog, you’ll reduce the number of calls from people who aren’t close to making a purchase. People who are just browsing and looking for basic information will be able to read it on your business blog instead of calling you!

Keeping up the content on small business blogs can be difficult – if you can’t manage regular blog items consider having our writing service do it for you.
