Quality content is the most powerful SEO factor: Google says so!

Are you spending a large chunk of your budget on SEO and as little as possible on content creation? You might want to rethink that in 2013, and instead invest in developing a content strategy and engaging good copywriters. SEO isn’t dead, but it’s certainly changed. Here is all the evidence you need that quality content is the most powerful SEO tool available to you. Google says so You’d have to be silly not to listen to Google on the subject of content creation and SEO. So let’s take a quick look at what they have to say. On page 14 of their publication The Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide, they open the chapter on content with the telling statement: “Creating compelling and useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other factors discussed here.” On the Google Webmasters site you’ll find an article containing tips on creating Google friendly sites. The first one opens with: “Provide high quality content on your pages…” In a 2011 post on the Webmaster Central Blog, Google offered a great deal of information on their definition of a high quality website and on what constitutes quality content. The post discusses the aim of the site quality algorithm Panda, and while they state that they are not listing the ranking signals, they do provide a list of 23 points to provide “guidance” on how Google looks at content. You’d have to assume there is a healthy correlation between what the algorithms aim to detect and the list of factors Google believes define quality content. Summarising the guidance on what constitutes good content, it’s...

How to get the most out of content marketing

What is content marketing? Content marketing is the creation of content that attracts more traffic to your site, engages your customers and helps to promote your business. When done properly, it can be a highly effective way to increase sales and build your reputation online. Content creation can be time consuming and many businesses outsource this task to a content marketing agency or a writing service, particularly small to medium sized business with limited in-house resources. The better the quality the more professional your business will look and the more likely you are to engage your target audience. Content is often written, but visual content such as video is becoming increasingly popular. What type of content is best? If you have a business blog or write any kind of online articles, you are already doing some content marketing, but there may be much more you could be doing. There is a variety of content which can be used effectively including: Blog posts Articles Videos Social media updates EBooks White papers Podcasts The right platforms for you will depend largely on your business and who your potential customers are, or more importantly, where they spend the most time online. To make the most out of your efforts you need to have a content marketing strategy in which you identify your target audience and the websites or social media platforms where they spend time. What’s in it for your business? If you have a well thought out strategy and spend some time on quality content creation it can benefit your business in a number of ways. These include: Promoting your business to a...

3 common SEO issues that can cost you traffic

In this article, Bill Vasiliadis from SEO for Small Business looks at 3 common SEO issues that cost business websites traffic and he provides links to some handy SEO tools you can use. There are several SEO issues that can cost your website valuable traffic ranging from on-page issues to off-page and technical problems. Here are three of the most common ones I see every day with business websites. Although quite basic, many sites get these three areas wrong – and it’s unnecessarily costing them traffic and sales! 1) Is your site crawlable? It is vital that search engine spiders are able to access your site pages and crawl all components of your website content including text, images, and links! When a search engine spider visits your site, its job is to visit and index as many of your site pages as possible within a set time period. If it comes across obstacles, then you are missing out on potential indexing of your site pages which results in less visibility and traffic from the search engines. Obstacles can include complex navigational setups which use technologies that are not easily accessible by the search engines (for example complex Javascript or Flash). Although search engines are getting better at interpreting these kinds of technologies, nothing beats plain HTML text links for your site’s primary navigation. You can still come up with attractive and effective navigational options while ensuring it is accessible! Speak to your designer and developer about this and consult with an SEO consultant if required. Other search engine stumbling blocks include broken links on your site which results in a ‘page not found’ error, and...

Sydney Criminal Lawyers and a contenting tale about long tail keywords

Long tail keywords in blog content: a case study If you discovered a simple way to attract 50% more visitors to your business website and increase your conversation rate by 40%, just by adding blog content, how quickly would you take up that opportunity? It’s a level of change that could have quite an impact on turnover. One business, Sydney Criminal Lawyers has done exactly that over the past 3 months. Not by themselves mind you – they had a little help from our article writers and from Bill at SEO for Small Business. The good news is that Bill and Ugur Nedim from SCL have agreed to share their blog strategy and results with our readers. The long tail keyword strategy Three months ago Bill and Ugur decided to target long tail keyword phrases. These were long tail phrases that were already bringing some traffic to the website, but as the SCL site wasn’t high in the organic search results for those phrases, the number of visitors arriving via those keywords was low. Bill calls these “under performing” long tail keywords. The strategy: to post 3 items each week to the SCL blog, incorporating long tail keywords into the posts. Naturally, writing blog posts isn’t a priority task for criminal lawyers so SCL began to order their blog posts from Article Writers Australia. Bill and Ugur monitored the results over 3 months. The SCL results For the past 3 months, organic traffic has increased by 50% For the past 3 months, overall site traffic has increased by 50% For the past 3 months, organic conversions for non-branded keywords have increased...
